Assessment

Collecting UAS Data for a Wetland Near Tomah WI

1. Prior to this activity how would you rank yoursef in knowledge about the topic? (1 - No knowledge at all, 2 - Very little knowledge, 3 -            Some knowledge, 4 - A good amount of knowledge, 5 - I knew all about this)

Answer: 3 - Some Knowledge
Because of the last few UAS and Field Methods Labs, I was fairly comfortable placing the GCPs and getting the drone ready for its mission.

2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1 - I don't really know enough to talk about the     topic, 2 - I know enough to explain what I did, 3 - I know enough to repeat what I did, 4 - I know enough to teach someone else, 5 - I am       an expert)

Answer:  4 - I know enough to teach someone else
I could teach someone else what I did. Although, most of this lab consisted of just watching you and your business partner do the work.

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1 - Strongly disagree, 2 - Disagree, 3 - No real opinion,      4 - Agree, 5 -Strongly agree)

Answer: 5- Strongly Agree
Being hands on did help to see how business gets done in regards to UAS flights.

Other Learning Strategies
I think that there could another component to this lab if you wanted. It was nice to have a nice break though in the sense that we didn't have to process this data.

South Middle School Ponds and Garden Field Day

I already knew how to process the data collected. However, I learned how to use the survey grade GPS unit. I didn't know how to do this before. Also, I learned a little about mission planning and that to check for updates before taking the field.

I'm fairly comfortable with the material.

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1 - Strongly disagree, 2 - Disagree, 3 - No real opinion,      4 - Agree, 5 -Strongly agree)

Answer: 5- Strongly Agree
This lab had to be hands on. Otherwise, I would have never learned how to use GCPs in the field. Also, flying the DJI Inspire was fun.

Other Learning Strategies

I think this lab went well. Just like the Crafting GCPs lab, everybody helped out. I think that nothing needs to be changed about this lab. It is a good intro lab to using UAS in the field.

Crafting GCPs

I already knew how to spray paint, use a table saw, and use a template. I would have just have needed to know the material used.

I could teach someone else what I did. .

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1 - Strongly disagree, 2 - Disagree, 3 - No real opinion,      4 - Agree, 5 -Strongly agree)

Answer: 4 - Agree
This lab didn't have to be hands on, but our class needs GCPs for the field for the next couple weeks so it was necessary to craft them

Other Learning Strategies
I think this lab went well. Everybody participated so the GCPs got created quickly. I wouldn't change anything about this lab, but because it took so fast, you could plan to do something else related to UAS if you wanted.

Mission Planning Essentials

1. Prior to this activity how would you rank yoursef in knowledge about the topic? (1 - No knowledge at all, 2 - Very little knowledge, 3 -            Some knowledge, 4 - A good amount of knowledge, 5 - I knew all about this)

Answer: 2 - Very Little Knowledge
I knew some of the basic mission planning essentials, but I was completely unfamiliar with the C³P software.

The mission planning software was really simple to learn.

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1 - Strongly disagree, 2 - Disagree, 3 - No real opinion,      4 - Agree, 5 -Strongly agree)

Answer: 4 - Agree
It would be difficult to learn the C³P software in a lecture setting

Other Learning Strategies
It would be nice if you mentioned the name of the mission planning software in the direction "C³P" in the instructions. I thought from class that the software was names "C'P". This made it difficult to locate the software when starting the assignment. You could also say to refer to the help in the C³P software because it really outlines the mission planning really well.

Processing Oblique Imagery

1. Prior to this activity how would you rank yoursef in knowledge about the topic? (1 - No knowledge at all, 2 - Very little knowledge, 3 -            Some knowledge, 4 - A good amount of knowledge, 5 - I knew all about this)

Answer: 3- Some Knowledge
This is the first time using the annotation feature in Pix4D. I am pretty familiar with the user interface though because I've used Pix4D for this class so much this semester so it was pretty east to pick up.

This lab was fairly light on the amount of work that was involved and would not be very difficult to explain to someone what I did. The hardest part would be explaining what the three different annotation templates are used for

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1 - Strongly disagree, 2 - Disagree, 3 - No real opinion,      4 - Agree, 5 -Strongly agree)

Answer: 4 - Agree
Doing this lab hands on did help.

Other Learning Strategies
I think that it would be nice if there was a noticeable difference between using the annotation and not using it. Perhaps, if new pictures of an object were taken which specifically had things overlapping it such as sticks or brush the advantages of annotating could really be seen.

Calculating Volumes of Sand Piles Using Pix4D and ESRI Tools

1. Prior to this activity how would you rank yoursef in knowledge about the topic? (1 - No knowledge at all, 2 - Very little knowledge, 3 -            Some knowledge, 4 - A good amount of knowledge, 5 - I knew all about this)

Answer: 1 - No knowledge at all
I had never before calculated volumes in Pix4D or in ArcMap. Many of the tools used were the first time I had ever used them

This lab was fairly light on the amount of work that was involved and would not be very difficult to explain to someone what I did.

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1 - Strongly disagree, 2 - Disagree, 3 - No real opinion,      4 - Agree, 5 -Strongly agree)

Answer: 4 - Agree
Although doing this hands on did help me learn it, I think that it could have also been taught in a lecture setting.

Other Learning Strategies
Potentially this lab could be made a little bit more intense so that it required to compare the calculated volumes using the UAS data with GCPs and without GCPs.

Processing Multi-Spectral Imagery

I was already familiar with the image classification process for classifying permeable and impermeable surfaces, but the review was very beneficiary. I was very unfamiliar with the Near Infrared, and Red Edge bands before this lab.

The processing for this lab was fairly simple compared to previous labs. I could teach someone else how to create the maps in need be.

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1 - Strongly disagree, 2 - Disagree, 3 - No real opinion,      4 - Agree, 5 -Strongly agree)

Answer: 5 - Strongly Agree
This is true especially for the image classification and creating the composite bands image.

Other Learning Strategies
The PDF for this lab outlined the lab fairly well. I think that learning about what NIR and RE can be used for in class would be useful though.

Using GCPs to Process UAS Data in Pix4D

Before this lab, I knew what GCPs were, but I didn't know how to use them in Pix4D.

Throughout this lab, I messed up the processing many times, and because I had to redo the lab so many times, I am very comfortable with it now, and could teach someone else how to do it.

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1 - Strongly disagree, 2 - Disagree, 3 - No real opinion,      4 - Agree, 5 -Strongly agree)

Answer: 5 - Strongly Agree
Learning new software can really only be taught in a hands on way. The best way to learn is to struggle through the software which did happen a lot in this lab. I found that other people I talked with struggled too, and we figured it out together.

Other Learning Strategies
This lab was pretty well set up. The only thing that could be different is that I wish the reoptimizing part of the lab was emphasized more. It was only very briefly mentioned in the PowerPoint.

Using ArcPro and UAS data to Calculate Impervious Surface Area

Before this tutorial I had never used ArcPro. Many of the tools used in the tutorial were also new to me.

Answer:  3 - I know enough to repeat what I did
I could follow the instructions again if I had to, but I don't think I'd be comfortable teaching someone else. Many of the tools had many inputs, and I am still pretty unfamiliar with ArcPro. Doing more tutorials would help, like having a Mag book for ArcPro.

The best way to learn is to struggle through the software which did happen to me time to time especially when I had to add all of the elements to the map in layout view at the end.

Other Learning Strategies
It would be nice to have started out with ArcPro with a more basic tutorial. This tutorial just dived right into it. The directions were very useful and necessary. Perhaps this lab could be broken up into two smaller ArcPro tutorials which focus in on learning the basics if the purpose of this lab is to learn about ArcPro.

Processing Data Using PixD

1. Prior to this activity how would you rank yoursef in knowledge about the topic? (1 - No knowledge at all, 2 - Very little knowledge, 3 -            Some knowledge, 4 - A good amount of knowledge, 5 - I knew all about this)

Answer: 1 - No Knowledge
Before this report I had never heard of Pix4D.

I could teach someone else what I did if I had to. I feel like I have a good understanding of what I did.

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1 - Strongly disagree, 2 - Disagree, 3 - No real opinion,      4 - Agree, 5 -Strongly agree)

Answer: 5 - Strongly Agree
Doing the project on my own really helped me to learn a lot. I also feel that I'm more likely to retain the information because I learned it on my own. Following the PowerPoint proved to be really useful, I think that without the PowerPoint this assignment would have been extremely difficult,

Other Learning Strategies
I wouldn't recommend anything different for this lab. I think it was well structured, and really helped to get a basic understanding of what Pix4D can be used for.

Cartographic Fundamentals

Before this report I knew all about the fundamentals of making cartographic pleasing maps, but I didn't know very much about DSMs, DEMs, orthorectifying.

Answer: 3 - I know enough to repeat what I did.
I could do the assignment over again if I had to, but I wouldn't be comfortable teaching someone else how to do it. I'd have to refer to my blog a lot if I did.

Other Learning Strategies
I think that it could be showed in the demo where to find the descriptive statistics for the DSM image. I had some difficulty knowing what it was because I am very unfamiliar with it. Also, I don't like having the put the question from the instruction into my report. I think that it would be better to just answer the questions while making my own headings. It would help the flow of the report.

UAS Platform Consulting Report

Before this report I hardly knew anything about UAS platforms, let alone their price range and details.

Answer: 3 - I know enough to repeat what I did.
It was difficult to find the correct information needed for this report. I know what research I did, and I could do it again.

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1 - Strongly disagree, 2 - Disagree, 3 - No real opinion,      4 - Agree, 5 -Strongly agree)

Answer: 2 - Disagree.
I feel that this information would have been easier to learn in a classroom lecture setting. I'm not sure I learned what I was supposed to learn. Having an introduction to UAS platforms would have been helpful.

4. Other learning strategies?
As stated in my response to question three, I think that it would have been helpful to get a small introduction to UAS platforms before doing this report. This would have helped me to identify potentially more important parts of the platforms rather than doing research on platforms and concentrating on some potentially less useful details.
